Following the original song’s release earlier this year, Jimmy Harvey is back with a delicious bubblegum pop remix of “Call Me Back (When You’re Sober)” from alt-pop artist and producer, Maya Yenn.
The original song, written by Harvey and the song’s producer, Michelangelo Dousis, is an anthemic pop number that laments an ex who frequently calls drunk to say they want to get back together, only to go radio silent the next morning. The lyrical storytelling aptly explores the unwanted feelings that get dredged up when partly-healed past relationships resurface and the pains that often come with boundary setting.
Maya Yenn, who previously remixed Rosie Tee’s “Emerald” transforming the nu-jazz track into an eclectic, tropical pop remix, adds her trademark emotional warmth to Harvey’s ode to navigating modern romance, creating a vibrant yet delicate remix full of glittering, airy synths, playful basslines and pleasing phone bleeps and bloops resulting in a lighthearted takeaway that still rings true to the subject matter.
The track begins with Harvey’s sultry, delicate vocals peppered with phone buttons beeping melodically before an 8-bit style bass punches in sporadically underpinning Harvey’s endearingly self-aware lyrics, “Know you’re not in love with me / You’re intoxicated”.
Jimmy Harvey, who’s previous releases include, “Boy in My Mind” and “Boys Are Just a Waste of Time” is an independent artist and songwriter based in London who has seen consistent support from BBC Introducing. His brand of commercial yet refreshingly honest pop often concerns the trials (and occasional joys) of modern dating.
On the other hand, Maya Yenn is an alt-pop artist, producer and composer hailing from the Midlands who is perhaps best known for creating beats using household objects on TikTok. The self-directed music video for her sophomore release, “How Much Sadness Can You Swallow?” won “Best Music Video” at the British Independent Film Festival this year and her most recent release, “Better Luck Next Time” was picked up by Tom Robinson for the BBC Introducing Mixtape and was Gemma Bradley’s BBC Introducing Pick of the Week on BBC Radio One.
The pair met some years earlier however, when they both studied Drama and Theatre Arts at university and their instinct for theatricality is certainly evident in the upcoming remix:
“Jimmy tells such relatable stories with his lyrics, he really bares his soul! I felt really drawn to that vulnerability in the original song and wanted to play on it even more in the remix.” Yenn explained.
When speaking about the production choices in the remix, Yenn added, “I really wanted to hear Jimmy’s vocal as if he was actually talking to someone on the phone, literally telling them to ‘call him back’ and I knew I wanted to do something with actual phone sounds too. I love using sound this way, I think it really helps set the scene for the listener.”
