Full Bio
Independent artist, singer, songwriter and producer, Maya Yenn’s irresistible cocktail of melodic pop and charismatic weirdness combine to produce a truly unique sound with eccentric but accessible appeal. Through narrative-heavy, immersive songwriting, Maya is able to handle complex themes with discerning self-awareness to create music that’s equal parts playful and honest. Armed with her uniquely poised vocals, thoughtful lyrics, and potent storytelling; this is the sound of an artist pushing the boundaries of pop.
Taking inspiration from the upbeat pop-sound of bands like Glass Animals, Jungle and Still Woozy with influences from poignant electronic and R&B innovators like FKA twigs and James Blake to craft her own brand of eclectic, alt-pop.
Despite being at the start of her career, Maya’s first three singles have all received consistent support from BBC Introducing and two of the three singles were selected by Tom Robinson for the BBC Introducing Mixtape for BBC 6 Music. Maya has recorded two BBC Live Sessions, her self-directed music video for “How Much Sadness Can You Swallow?” won “Best Music Video” at several film festivals last year including the British Independent Film Festival, and her most recent release, “Better Luck Next Time” was Gemma Bradley’s BBC Introducing Pick of the Week on BBC Radio One. Her fourth single, “Sour Grapes” is a partially-satirical take on adulthood not being all it's cracked up to be, set to characterful, bombastic pop.
Maya grew up in rural Staffordshire before moving to London having previously supported artists such as Dan Croll and Stealing Sheep as a teenager. She moved back to her parents’ Staffordshire home at the beginning of the pandemic to start her solo project and has continued to write and produce music from her childhood home.
Known for her inventive beats on TikTok using samples from everyday objects and her genre-bending alt-pop sound, Maya creatively directs every aspect of her project from writing and producing her own songs and curating her cover art to writing and directing her own music videos.
